Back-to-School Eye Exam for Your Child

As the new school year approaches, it’s important to make sure that your child is ready for academic success. One often-overlooked aspect of this is their vision. Did you know that vision problems can affect a child’s learning and development? That’s why we recommend scheduling a back-to-school eye exam for your child.

We also want to bring your attention to the myopia epidemic that is affecting children worldwide. Myopia, also known as nearsightedness, is a condition where distant objects appear blurry, while close objects can be seen clearly. Not only does this mean that kids could not see what the teacher is showing, but it also means that their eye deteriorates: it grows longer than it should, faster than it should, and becomes weaker as this happens. Myopia is becoming increasingly common in children. In fact, half of North America’s population is predicted to have myopia by the year 2030.

Left untreated, myopia increases the risk of degenerative eye conditions including glaucoma, retinal detachment, and others.

There are several factors that contribute to the myopia epidemic, including increased screen time not enough outdoor time, and, of course, genetics. During your child’s eye exam, we can assess their risk for myopia and provide guidance on how to maintain good eye health.

We hope to see you soon and wish your child a successful school year ahead!
